WORLD GREEN ECONOMY SUMMIT


The World Green Economy Summit (WGES) is one of the leading global forums on the green economy. It brings together world-class experts in critical sectors from around the world to directly focus on advancing the global green economy and climate action agenda, achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and Agenda 2030. Through its high-level segment, where leaders from around the region and the world come together, the WGES successfully raises green economy related issues to the global political agenda in pursuit of advancing action towards a sustainable future for all.

As the key international summit taking place between the two climate change conferences, WGES 2023 will build upon the progress made at COP27 in Egypt and raise momentum towards COP28 in the United Arab Emirates. WGES 2023 will be a milestone in the global climate action calendar to accelerate climate action implementation ahead of the COP28, enhance understanding around the key political messages to advance climate negotiations, and engage all stakeholders of the international community.

The summit showcases innovative solutions and leading practices to inspire change and aims to align stakeholders with policymakers to create a facilitative environment and ecosystem for sustainable green growth that addresses current and future needs.

Title: On the road to COP28: From Sharm El Sheikh to Dubai

Description: This high-level ministerial panel will offer a platform for countries to discuss key political priorities ahead of COP28. Discussions will center around key topics such as the loss and damage fund, global goal on adaptation, climate finance, carbon markets, just transition, and other priority issues.

Description: Objective is to support the first “Global Stock Take” through promoting the exchange of experience and good practice, recommendations, new opportunities and lessons learned, in adaptation including loss and damage, mitigation including response measures, and means of implementation (technology transfer, capacity-building, and climate finance) while aiming to facilitate the assessment of global collective progress at COP28.

This session will provide an overview of the Global Alliance on Green Economy, as a key enabler of the transition to a green economy and pathway to a net-zero world. Key ministers from countries that are party to the Global Alliance will share their perspectives on the transformative potential of the alliance.

Title: The Global Alliance on Green Economy Solutions Forum

Description: This session will contribute towards the identification and showcasing of innovative, feasible, and replicable solutions and options for high impact policies and actions to accelerate the global energy transition, achieve emissions reductions in line with the 1.5-degree goal, accelerate the scaling up of removals, enable just transitions and enhance resilience, towards the achieving of the green economy transition.

Moreover, the forum will allow for the sharing of good practice and success stories from around the world, and specifically from the membership of the Global Alliance on Green Economy, to promote the exchange of actionable lessons learned with the objective of creating tangible partnerships and promoting cooperation.

Countries who have yet to join the Alliance will also be invited to the Forum.

Private Sector Engagement

Title: Private Sector Engagement in Low-Emission and Resilient Pathways

Description: This session will showcase the number of initiatives under the Marrakesh Partnership and the High-Level Climate Champions which have spurred private sector engagement in climate action. The objectives are to show the current level of engagement, as well as encourage other non-party stakeholders to commit to greener action. Examples from the private sector will also be showcased, to demonstrate the business case for climate action.

Match-Making Platform
Format: Networking Setting

Networking Event for Matchmaking

Title: The Platform to Bridge the Gap

Description: This session will bring together representatives from development and implementing organizations to present on the type of support available to countries and the modalities for its access.

The objective of this session is to create and launch an international “match-making platform’’ which can be instrumental for mobilizing climate finance for developing countries through key market players such as funds, investors, multilateral development banks, development organizations, private sector, and the UN System, to enable fast-tracked access to finance, capacity-building, and technology transfer to support the “implementation” of Nationally Determined Contributions and long-term strategies in alignment with the Paris Agreement

This platform may set the stage for and contribute to the Sharm el-Sheikh mitigation ambition and implementation work programme discussions taking place ahead of COP28 bringing together the lessons learned from the global and regional forums and dialogues of the work programme discussions. The group of development organizations mobilized to create this match-making platform will constitute a “Friends of the Global Alliance on Green Economy” which will support and promote the Global Alliance through their efforts.

After presentations from support providers and countries, a networking session is proposed.
